How to Start a Podcast

Are you interested in starting a podcast? It can all be a bit overwhelming. Here are some of the tools of the trade that we use for our podcast.

We recommend the Audio-Technica ART2100-USB as a great inexpensive microphone option. Mount the mic on an arm boom and add a pop filter. The boom arm will allow you to position the microphone close to your mouth so that you can get a great sound while sitting or standing comfortably. The pop filter reduces the popping sounds caused by the air you breath hitting the microphone when you talk.

You can get ALL of this for under $100 and get great sound quality. If you are just starting out, there is no need to break the bank and this mic will provide sound quality comparable to much higher priced options.

You will need one microphone per person. If you are co-hosting or if you will be interviewing guests in-house, be sure to have one mic for each person you will be recording. If you try to record multiple people on one mic, you will greatly sacrifice sound quality.

The next tool we use for ever recording is the Zoom H5 Digital Recorder. This recording device allows us to record from two in-house mics as well as record a call-in interviewee at the same time. It can record four tracks at once, although we only use it for three. It is the perfect size for recording while traveling as it fits easily into your hand and is about the size of a walkie-talkie. However, it is the perfect solution for in-home or in-studio recording as well. It only requires 2 AA batteries and a SD/ SDHC card (up to 32GB) shown below.  It is extremely easy to use and delivers high-quality sound in an easy to edit format.

You will definitely need a set of headphones so that you can hear yourself, your co-host, and/or interviewees while recording.

This pair of Odio headphones are easy to use and stay put during recording.

We out-source our editing and show notes with a company called ProPodcast Solutions (click for details). They offer a variety of services to fit any budget. They can take care of editing, show notes, intro/outtro creation, set-up, coaching and much more.  We are not affiliated with them in any way and do not receive compensation for referring other podcasters to them. We simply love to support small businesses when they offer outstanding service.

We hope you found this helpful in setting up your new podcast.
